Day 27, Workshop

Workshop.
His marmalade jars of curtain runners
Jostle screws, nails, boxes of come in handy,
Shelves stocked, labelled within a hands reach
Of putting together, of making do.

Piles of blades of saws accompany the rafters
Waiting for the time they’re made new.
The vice he pestered me for years ago
Rusts against the future’s closed back door,
Where planks lean, crowd towards the meagre light
Inhaling the smell of oil mixed with rot,
Waiting, too, waiting to be transformed:
But the workshop’s falling down.

It’s not my place, this, I hear him laugh;
I’m helpless, a foreigner, all out of words.

Day 26, Ashley

Without a reader
a poem does not exist.
You just made this now.
Ashley

Day 25, Ashley

she sits and cuts
and cuts and sits
and sobs and cries
and sniffs and hurts
and hides her pain
beneath long sleeves
and cos it's hidden
we don't see
she sits and cuts

Day 26 Dream

Dream.
Holes in the ground where a floor used to be
Punched down through storeys, sliding towards gloom
While workers walk on air, passing, warning me
Stay clear for your own good, avoid this doom.

They leave, I listen to the cylinder
Of trace fossil rock, eyeing the cobbles
The masons carved (those murmuring chisellers),
Left to guard against me, protect their gospels
From my sight. I turn away, uncertain
But knowing that they’ve wrought fears into dragons
At every turn, to stop an incursion:
If words are ignored, here there be caverns.

The price is high for reasons of their own,
They turn me aside with guardians of stone.

Day 24, Re-Ordering

Re-Ordering.
It should be encouraged. Defacing books.
A few blank pages left at the end
For you to fill flyleaves with dirty secrets,
A new ending. “This was good.” “This was crap,”
Then pass it on, in a library where pens
Are allowed, lines scratched amid graffiti,
Now and then making poems from potboilers,
If you knew where to look, a chance for truth
To emerge at last: “Why is D’Arcy hot?”

Or let the chavs and wags and track suit boys
In Waterstones, fill the shelves marked classics
With the Hungry Caterpillar and toys,
Hear them laugh the laugh that lasts today
Watch them misspell, on end papers, their names.
